Shorts
Double You Studios Shorts and Jorts
When the weather warms up, this is where the denim goes. There are seven pieces, from £40 to £75, and most of them are jorts: denim shorts in washed blue, washed black and raw denim, plus a pleated tan short for when denim feels too casual.
Classic jorts
The 4 Star Jorts and the Blue DYS Classic Jorts, both £75, are the statement pieces in the category, with details that set them apart from a plain denim short. The Washed Blue Denim Jorts and the Washed Black Denim Jorts, at £40, are the everyday pairs: easy, broken in, and simple to wear with almost any tee in the range.
Raw denim shorts
The Raw Denim Jorts at £40 and the Raw Denim Shorts at £75 are for people who like denim that changes with wear. Raw denim starts darker and stiffer and softens over the summer, fading along the creases of how you move. It is the same appeal as a pair of raw denim jeans, in a lighter summer form.
Pleated shorts
The Pleated Shorts in tan, at £75, are the smartest option here. Pleats give the shorts a fuller, more tailored shape, which pairs well with a studio shirt or a plain tee for a summer evening out. They are also the pair to choose when denim feels too heavy on a hot day.
Getting the length and fit right
With relaxed jorts, the length decides the whole look. A hem just above or at the knee looks current and balanced; much shorter looks dated, and much longer starts to look like cropped trousers. Pair relaxed shorts with a tee that finishes at the hip, rather than an oversized top that swallows the shape. Our guide to shorts outfits has more ideas for summer outfits.
Washed or raw for summer
Washed jorts are the easier summer pick: they are soft from the first wear, cooler on a hot day and easy to throw in the wash after a weekend away. Raw denim shorts take a little breaking in and feel heavier at first, but they reward the effort with fades that are yours alone. If you only buy one pair, go washed. If you already own jorts and want something with more character, go raw.
What to wear with them
Jorts pair best with the simplest pieces in the range. A plain or graphic tee, a stripe polo, or a short sleeve shirt worn open all work. On cooler summer evenings, a zip knit or a light windbreaker over a tee keeps the outfit relaxed.
Choosing your size
- Stay with your usual waist size. Jorts are cut to sit relaxed, so there is no need to size up.
- Check the leg opening and length on the product page if you prefer a particular fit.
- Raw denim can give slightly at the waist as it softens, so a snug first fit is normal.
Care
Wash denim shorts inside out on a cool cycle and hang them to dry, which keeps the colour from fading too quickly. Raw denim can go longer between washes so the fades set in. Wash the pleated shorts on a cool cycle and press the pleats while they are still slightly damp to keep their shape.
