This is the biggest category in the shop, with thirty one pieces priced from £20 to £70. It covers the everyday layer that goes under everything else: graphic tees, plain tees, waffle sleeve tops and button-up studio shirts, pinstripe and plaid shirts, and stripe polos. If you are new to Double You Studios, a tee is the easiest way to try the brand, starting with the Project Tee at £20.

Graphic tees

The graphic tees carry most of the brand's personality. The Three Logo Tee, The Cassette Tee and the Studios Star T Shirt, in black, red and its original colour, are all £70, and each one gives a plain outfit something to be about. With a graphic tee, keep the rest of the outfit simple: plain jeans, a plain jacket, and let the print be the focal point.

Plain tees and waffle sleeve tops

Plain tees such as the Studios Tee in green are the layer that makes every other piece work. They go under a denim jacket, a workwear jacket or an open zip knit. The Waffle Sleeve Tees, in grey, olive and their original colour at £60, add texture at the sleeves, which gives a simple outfit a little more interest without adding a print.

Studio shirts

The Studios Shirt comes in black, white with green and white with blue, alongside the DYS Split Shirt in black and a plain Black Shirt. A button-up shirt is the smartest item in the category. Worn buttoned, it works for an evening out; worn open over a plain tee, it becomes a light overshirt for warmer days. The contrast colourways look best with dark or black jeans.

Pinstripe, plaid and polo shirts

The Pinstripe Shirt comes in brown, white and blue, and the plaid shirts in navy and brown, all at £60. A pinstripe reads smarter than a plain shirt without looking formal, and a plaid shirt worn open over a tee is one of the easiest autumn layers there is. The Symmetry Shirt in black and khaki, at £35, is a simpler everyday option.

The Dys Stripe Polo, at £35, comes in green, grey marl, navy and black. A polo sits between a tee and a shirt: the collar makes it look put together, while the knit feel keeps it as easy to wear as a tee. Alongside them are the Multi Logo Tee, the Studios Tee in washed black and off white, and the S&S Tee in washed black and off white, all at £35.

Building a small tee wardrobe

Tees wear out fastest because they are washed most often. Three in rotation last far longer than one worn twice a week. A sensible starting point is one graphic tee, one plain tee in black or white, and one waffle sleeve or coloured tee. Bought together, they also age together, so they keep looking like a set. Choosing your size

• Tees fit true to size with a relaxed cut. Size up only for a deliberately oversized look.
• Shirts are cut to wear open or buttoned. If you plan to wear one over a tee, stay with your usual size.
• Measure a tee you already own across the chest and down the length, then compare with the product page.

Care

Wash graphic tees inside out on a cool cycle to protect the print, and avoid a hot tumble dryer, which cracks prints and shrinks cotton. Hang shirts to dry and iron them inside out if needed.
